Into The Sun

The sun's going down
in front of me
I pull the visor a little lower
I sometimes drive
down Broad
Wondering to myself
Will today be the day
I just keep going
The day I don't stop
and turn around
The day I leave this same
old town

Today I went a little farther
than I had before
And I honestly would have felt
no regret for continuing
I knew that but
I've never been a fan of quitting
or running away
But sometime, and some day
Maybe it's better than
the alternative

Driving toward the sun
Echoes of what could've been
Nothing these days
seems simple
Or even like it accomplishes
a thing
Do I just lay back down
And see what tomorrow brings
I don't think I will
Because "could be"
can sting
If I live in regret

I've never felt
like I really fit
Never had that sense
of belong
Please don't interrupt
I'm almost done
with this part of my song
This time, this time
is of the essence

Deal with it early
and deal with it quick
Else this thing
could eat you
Warm sun
on my face when I say
Though I'm all over the place
With these thoughts
Somehow what I want to say
is that this day's almost done

And on that note
I have no regrets about it
So sometimes just listening
to my head instead of
my heart
Is the best thing
especially when
I see no end in site
So goodbye, sleep well
Good night

Off Cue (Book)

Well let me put it this way
If you read 2 chapters of a book
You can't hope to really know the plot

So if you don't let anyone read you
How can you expect someone
To get your story

Words say my next step
Is this truth or fiction
Words mark my way
Seems like there's way too much friction
I guess I'll have to drop that line
Cause I'm off cue
I'll be fine

I like to think I'm an open book
But sometimes I think I divert
To fiction to detract from my bio

Cause, oh Lord, sometimes it takes too long
To read the whole book
And it gets longer every day

Words say my next step
Is this truth or fiction
Words mark my way
Seems like there's way too much friction
I guess I'll have to drop that line
Cause I'm off cue
I'll be fine

I don't even recognize the main character
But only at times
There's glimpses in clips and phrases
As I look back on old scripts

Evening's past
One's heart can become too entwined
As a wise man said
Don't awaken love until it so desires

Dusty paths walked down
Talks that last till 3am
Sitting alone even in a crowded room
Stars shared that make you feel so small

Words say my next step
Is this truth or fiction
Words mark my way
Seems like there's way too much friction
I guess I'll have to drop that line
Cause I'm off cue
I'll be fine

All these chapters must add up
To some kind of happy ending
Cause what kind of story finishes so flat

That's why there's hope in the 11th hour
Cause ya gotta know pieces will fit together
And a conclusion will finish this part of the story

Maybe I jumped the gun
This is no conclusion
This just sets the final conflict
In this story

And the final words
Don't know if I'm telling myself
Of if this is from you

What's past is past
Please just trust me
And I trust your eyes
But I don't trust mine

It's okay you tell me
I know you've failed
You touch my shoulder
I'll help you walk through
This final part

Words say my next step
Is this truth or fiction
Words mark my way
Seems like there's way too much friction
I decide to drop my line
Cause I'm off cue
I'll be fine

Is this truth or fiction
Words mark my way
There's on final thing to say
I'll have to drop my line
I'll be fine

Distance From There To Now

Lately, I'm runnin low on a lot of things
It's like I bypassed a better thing
And no matter how much I write and sing
This is a one way street

So here's a new day
Understanding, walking with me in my shoes
Don't know if I'll ever find that
Disappointment's like a drug I can't stop taking

And you cry
Please come back to me
You don't need to run
Please don't run
You can wake up new, just wait and see
You know my pen is drying out, my voice is done

Every day is a new day you still say
I can choose redemption
And ignore the pull on me
That's driving me down

I slept past today
Maybe cause I need to jolt this feeling
It's as if I can start now
And stop searching in the mud

So logic's taken holiday today
Fairer day than than would be today
Far cry from here

And you cry
Please come back to me
Don't run
Please don't run
You can wake up new, you'll see
My pen is dry, my voice is gone

I smile, cause it's kind of nice
That you're the only one
As I've closed my ears and run
You meet me each morning
With the rising golden sun

And these three years have been tough
You know more than anyone
Especially these last six months
You pull up my eyes

Not all is lost,
I've failed enough,
Trying on my own

Come back to me
Don't run
Oh please don't run
You wake up new
Pen is dry, voice slowly begun

Distance from there to now
Story stops suddenly
So sad so I say something

But funny thing about that is
Sadness can bring greater things
Once it is done

Wake up new
Write this down
Not all is lost, let me be
The last thing you hear
As you open your eyes

Compromise

We sit at a cafe
You don't say much
But that says to me
We know there's nothing to be said

Distance to the sun
Long as it's been
I'm not nearly there
Till body and soul separate
It's never too late

With temperature rising
I can't afford compromising
I look me in the mirror
Do you even recognize
In all my ponderings
In all these wonderings
Do I even recognize me

As we stroll down the sidewalk
A late fall day
The leaves are changing
And so are we
Light conversation mixes with the colors

With every compromise
That I make
I set a spark to my soul
That can't be put out easy
Why am I just now realizing

It's one thing for life
To turn out different
It's another to do
What you knew you would never do
So why am I just now realizing

With temperature rising
I can't afford compromising
I look me in the mirror
Do you even recognize
In all my ponderings
In all these wonderings
I think I recognize me

Cause we're not what we do
We're not what we say
We were never meant to be this way
And we never have to say
This is how it's always gonna be

Like a sickness
Compromise slowly takes hold
But only cause you let yourself
Be near what you knew would pollute
Your very soul

Obviously you're just a metaphor
Or a shadow of past
You're a mix of many a soul
But you're no less real
Neither is how I feel

I can't afford compromising
I look me in the mirror
In all my ponderings
In all these wonderings
One thing is clear

We're not what we do
We're not what we say
We were never meant to be this way

Close My Eyes (More Than Breathing)

When you sit here
Feels like your trapped
In this empty shell

Battles you thought you'd won
Seem to well back up again
Sometimes it shakes you
But waking is what you need

Just let me get acclimated.
It's more than I'd anticipated
Cause it wasn't just me that's made it

I can't stay too long
And don't you dare fake it
As if you've really feigned
From that, my heart is pained

And as I look around
I'm surrounded
What I'm lookin for
Still haven't found it

Something's gotta give.
Something's gotta tell
Me it's worth it.

Just let me get acclimated.
It's more than I'd anticipated
Cause it wasn't just me that's made it

I can't stay too long
And don't you dare fake it
As if you've really feigned
From that, my heart is pained

And the battle will subside
Perspective is everything
When everything is out of focus
And I know this

God put me here for more than breathing
He gives me hope
I can't just turn to fear

I shake myself awake
It's simple for me
I see your eyes
All you want it love

I wonder why it's hard to trust that
Despite how far I've come
So I close my eyes
Sight is more than eyes

Just let me get acclimated.
It's more than I'd anticipated
Cause it wasn't just me that's made it

I can't stay too long
But it's long enough

He put me here for more than breathing
He gives me hope
So I close my eyes
Sight seems clear now

I can't stay too long
But it's long enough

Mortar

Are we building walls
That just crumble
Is the mortar and stuff
Just not enough
To hold together

When you build
You hope
And you dream

Sometimes you build
You tear down
And then you come back again
What was built can be more
Than you ever thought before

I wish that I knew
More than I know
But I know more
Than I thought I would

Sometimes it's not how hard you work
More the thought behind it
Cry out all you want to
But it's not about that at all

Wisdom is something built
And you don't give it liberally
I can ask
If don't, how can I expect
To get more than frustration

Sometimes you build
You tear down
And then you come back again
What was built can be more
Than you ever thought before

I don't wanna hear that
At times
But there is peace
In these walls that you've built

I saw you at the corner
Of 29th and Last Week
It not all that far
From 4 streets ago

I asked you where
I could find it
You just smiled
And changed my direction

Sometimes you build
You tear down
And then you come back again
What was built can be more
Than you ever thought before

Are we building walls
That just crumble
Is the mortar and stuff
Just not enough
To hold together

I asked you
What's your name
Still smiling
You already know it
And I smiled back...

The Conversation

Cynicism is like cataracts
Slowly a haze forms in our eyes
Your vision is more than blurred
No way, I ain't gonna do that again
You say to yourself

And while we talk
We just met but I've already had
Countless conversations in my head
Before the date is over
I've already made up my mind

You have got to trust
In the idea that you can't know
What will happen
And that's okay

Cause there will come a day
When you won't have these questions
But you're not there yet
So stop your grasping
And love what you've got

Three days later
I'm just sitting listening to others
My mind wanders, looking in the distance
How can one be so optimistic one day
Then so dismissive the next

Glimpses of a chance
That falls flat once again
Hard not to get cynical
You can always smile and walk past

But if I never try
Anyone could see that gets me nowhere
But I can't let it mess me up
Anyone knows pain lost is peace gained

As we write back and forth
She says
I'm gonna be honest with you

You're worth more than that
You give yourself away
Way too easily
You're worth more than that

Do you still see your dreams
Do you want to build something
You and I aside
There's still time

So I feel like my eyes have cleared a bit
Maybe slowly, but at least I can see
Though we had that conversation
Four years ago
It still rings in my ear

Creeping Hour

In this creeping hour
Mine is the only light for miles
Something serene about know that
I rest in my thoughts

A lot of things seem outta whack
Surprisingly not that worried
It's enough to know that change is happenin
I can just embrace it

When I come out the other end
There's some I've left behind
But so is life
People grow apart

As we're getting older
And a boy becomes a man
There's no hard feelings
Just not a need to carry on

I'm comforted in the knowledge
That I don't have to worry
It's enough to know that change is happenin
I can just embrace it

I'm not all the things I thought I'd be
And there's more that I've done
Than I thought I would
And that's not due to me

You've blessed me as I've walked
You've blessed me as I've seen
I'm sure that if I let fear in
It'd help me none
I've done that before...

It's enough to know that change is happenin
I can just embrace it
Change is not always good
But sometimes it's better than here

After all this thinking I know
I can come back to this tomorrow
It's enough to know change is happening
And that's enough for me

Thin

The dawn of day
New things we do and say
This sense of the unseen
Makes me wonder
How could I feel stuck

But I do
Though in revelation I see
That I'm not
But before too long
My heart will catch up to my head

When we wake
We're still in our skin
When we dream
What we see seems so thin

But when I dream
I dream of tomorrow
And what is better than today
But today is where tomorrow begins
So my song is hope

The shore my mind washes up on
Is sometimes far from others
My heart is heavy
And I feel alone

I would never take it back
These years
That seem so long
And when I look back...
