Second Thought

No one wants to be that
You've gotta know
Sometimes just seems so
Same old same old

First impressions tends to be so good
Then there is the standard
I just don't know
I'm not ready right now
We made a mistake
Let's just take a step back now

When did I turn into the one
Who doesn't walk away
I'm not asking for the world
But in reality, I'm asking for you
In retrospect I guess I am
Asking for the world

There is an ache
For that pretty little face
The one that calls
And asks when I'm coming home

No one wants to be
The second thought
Always a great friend
But friend seems mediocre
Compared to being your love

And so I drive
Letting all this soak in
I know I have conversations
That we've never had

Sometimes patience just means
Coming to terms with
Reality, and letting it be
Take a cold, hard look
And just let it be

It's been five years
Since I felt this way
Is it worth all this
Back and forth
Not so sure anymore

The Rest of Your Life

Lights
A faded glow
Slowly starts to grow
And the day begins

And I'm smiling
Think you know why
Hey baby, not just maybe
So it started with a smile
Next thing we know
It's 2 am

So I ask Him
Can she really be it
Sure feels like it
I say hold up, slow down
Inclined to ask you
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

So we're sitting
Coffee lasts longer than we knew
And my heart is in my throat
Wouldn't let you know that
Sweet brown eyes

It's tough to concentrate
When you give that sideways smile
Dimples slight but unmistakable
Time slows
You can bet my heart didn't
Before I know, dinner has come and gone

So I ask
Can she really be it
Sure feels like it
I say hold up, slow down
Inclined to ask you
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

Neither of us even likes baseball
Good thing
Because we watched very little
You say your cheeks hurt
And that's a good thing
We joke, you'll make a great friend

So I ask Him
Can she really be it
Sure feels like it
I say hold up, slow down
Inclined to ask you
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

Coffee again
Talk ventures from funny
To life lessons
I'd love to take your hand
You say you need time
And I say whatever it takes

We joke again
You'll make a great friend
And I say I have no intention
Of just being your friend
You smile
You appreciate the honesty

So I ask you, Lord
Can she really be it
Sure feels like it
I say hold up, slow down
Inclined to ask you
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

Now that's crazy talk
Forgot what this felt like
Like new blood in my veins

We end the night visiting
Your little brother
At this point
Every step is one closer
For some reason I'm not worried
Not rushed

And I say, Lord
Can she really be it
Inclined to ask her
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

Wanna kiss you right now
But not be loving
Need to give you time
Whatever it takes

I'm inclined to ask you
What are you doing
For the rest of your life

Sun's down at this point
Lights faded long ago
And as my eyes start to close
Still have that smile on my face

What are you doing
For the rest of your life, baby

Slightly Faded

Like in a ship on a calm, peaceful day
The sway back and forth
The rhythm of conversation
Everything around her slightly faded
Makes you wanna be a better man

So I say to myself
Is this is what I remembered
It's a welcome distraction
From the hum drum of the day

Cause when you smile
The last 5 years don't mean a thing
Now and the future is all  that matters
Please just keep talking
Your sweet smile... melts the past away

If coffee could last all day
I'd hope it'd stay
And if dinner could continue
I'm fine with the menu
And if just talking to you
Could last and last
Life wouldn't be so fast

Everything slows down a bit

The sway back and forth
The rhythm of conversation
Everything around her slightly faded
Makes me wanna be a better man

A lot of my failures
And failed attempts
Seem to make sense somehow
But I still retract my steps a bit
Cause I want to be changed
Can't do this alone

And when you smile
I know I haven't known you that long
But I want to
So I pray that this day
Can last a little longer

So I slow down a bit

The sway back and forth
The rhythm of conversation
Everything around her slightly faded
Makes me wanna be a better man

Back Here Again

It's a place I recognize so well
Straight lipped and straight faced
Kind of tired of this
Disappointment has a face

Now I'm not one to dwell
Where my mind shouldn't be
But I do need to retrace my steps
To see how I got here

In a dark forest
Hands push on the dirt
To get back up again
Beaten, bruised, and I can't see clearly

But I've been here before
And I'm back here again
Now I'm older
I've been told I'm wiser
Either way, I'm back here again

When one thinks
Of all he's done in his life
He doesn't care to remember
Where he got lost

Lost is a funny word
Making my way towards the light
Branches cut my face
Haven't slept in days

By the time I make it out of here
I'd hope I remember where I've been

I've been here before
I'm back here again
Now I'm older
I've been told I'm wiser
Either way, I'm back here again

I guess it's true what they say
We are the sum of where we've
But where we were
Doesn't have to be who we are

It's actually lighter now
It's a dirt path but I've found it
It's been a long night
Just glad to be able to see

Despite the difficulty
I gotta believe there is a reason
Think I'm going to rest for a while

I'm not too worried
That I woke, and I'm back here again
This time I think I'll just stay
Sit here till day break

There's a certain freedom
In not knowing
And I'm alright with that
That's not to say
I'll never be here again
I just hope I remember

The Calm

When I'm sitting here alone
The quite gets louder
Trying to keep calm
The tension in my shoulders
Carrying this so long

All I need is one word
Just a whisper
I know you aren't in the storm
Just your name
Stirs something inside...

Wading in the water
Never overwhelms
It's once your feet can't touch
Doesn't seem so bad at first
Then barely treading water
Then gasping for air

And I cry out
Just one glimpse
To see your face
And I'll walk on water
What happens next I can't explain...

You don't tend to feel lost
At first surroundings look familiar
But as the sun begins to set
How long have I been wandering
Then panic sets in
That sinking, empty feeling... lost

And when the emotion has passed
I know that all I need
Is to listen
Cause you don't leave me here
You give me what I need

It's not what I thought it was
But it's what I need
It's what is true
That sense
The calm sets in
